Project Description: The Metropolitan Transportation Authority's (MTA) East Side Access project is the biggest transportation infrastructure project being implemented in North America. Construction works for the $10.17bn project began in 2002 and are scheduled for completion in December 2022. East Side Access project involves the expansion of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), the busiest commuter railroad in the US. It will provide an alternative new stop for all the 11 LIRR branches at a new terminal and concourse being built beneath Grand Central Terminal (GCT) and include 11 miles (17.7km) of tunnelling works at Queens Borough and Manhattan.

As a result of the confined space and multiple entry and exit points, the client also required that PBE provide a Tagging and Tracking solution. All of these systems where controlled and monitored via the MineBoss software systems.

Scope of Work:

The client required a communication system that would allow emergency operations to be carried out within the tunnels. PBE was awarded the contract to design, supply, test and commission the voice communication system that included a FM re-broadcasting and voice break in. The system is operated and controlled from remote control centres.

Project Description: The project entailed the construction of a single road tunnel approximately 2.4km in length.
Scope of Work:

PBE was awarded the contract and asked to carry out the design, supply, testing and commissioning of the communication system. The client was very specific in their requirements and wanted a system that provided a certain level of redundancy which would also allow the voice break in of emergency services on both the VHF and FM frequencies. The client also required that the whole system be controlled and monitored from a remote location. In order to satisfy the client requirement PBE designed a passive system with a minimal amount of active components, which also reduced the amount of maintenance that would be required.

Scope of Work:

PBE was awarded the contract for the design, supply, testing and commissioning a safety critical operating systems that would enable and facilitate the communication of both the operational and emergency response teams. The system had to be functional on both the VHF/UHF and Tetra communication bands. In order to reduce the amount of maintenance that woul be required, the client requested a minimal amount of active components are installed within the tunnel.
